POS Terminal: What is it and what are the different types?

Payment via POS terminal is now a daily use. We are talking about the electronic banking service and device that allow an operator to receive in their current account from a customer, payments by credit card, debit and prepaid. The terminal is connected to the high risk payment services provider, this is to allow the authorization and the related amount due is debited in real time, in favor of the creditor.

The POS terminals are also connected to the LAN and are now classified as small computing devices because they are programmed in the same way as a mini PC with high risk gateway provider, but currently, the communication channel is mainly the one telephone. Now let’s see what the different types of POS are:

POS Terminal

  • POS fixed: The most common and used. It’s the classic POS, what all we have used at least once in their lives, a device connected to the service center via a telephone line, thanks to the RJ-11 connector. Alternatively, it can also connect to the LAN, with the RJ-45
  • Mobile POS: Enables payment by Mobile (smartphone or tablet) thanks to Bluetooth technology. Obviously, in the client device must be installed app special. Once the transaction has been successfully completed, the customer receives an SMS on their device or a confirmation email (so keeps an eye on expenses and avoids cloning).
  • Virtual POS: If an operator has an e-commerce site, you may choose to receive payments through POS. You can have an internet page on your site, thus having an edge over the competition.
  • Pocket POS: For all those exhibitors who require the terminal displacement, allow you to receive payments bringing it directly to the customer. The range usually does not exceed 10 m and is more commonly used in bars, restaurants and even the gas stations. Bluetooth technology is used for transmission of data, but more and more often, for those exercises that have a modem router is more convenient to use the variant that uses the wireless.
  • POS GSM / GPRS: Allows you to receive payments through POS device, even without telephone network, but using a GSM / GPRS device or UMTS connection. It is therefore used a sim card for data transmission. We find these devices for example in taxis, to allow customers to pay by card.

All of us are accustomed to also use the pin pad, connected to the main device via wire (except pocket POS), where we type the secret code to authorize the transaction. What are the payment networks that you use? For debit cards, we have Maestro and V-Pay while credit cards can be used: MasterCard, Visa, Diners and American Express.
